Our 288 GTO
The Ferrari 288 GTO was conceived as a homologation special, created to return Ferrari to top-level GT competition under the FIA Group B regulations.
Based loosely on the 308, the 288 GTO was extensively re-engineered. The wheelbase was lengthened, the engine moved rearward into a true mid-engine position, and the body was formed from lightweight composite materials including Kevlar and carbon. Power came from a twin-turbocharged V8 and produced 400 hp.
Although Group B was cancelled before the 288 GTO could race, the project created Ferrari’s first supercar. Exclusively for their VIP clients, the plan was a production of 200, as that was the requirement for Group B homologations. In the end 272 were officially built, although in real the number comes close to 290.

Officially, the Ferrari 288 GTO was simply called GTO.
The designation stands for Gran Turismo Omologato, with Omologato meaning homologated. As Ferrari had previously used the GTO name for the 250 GTO, the designation 288 GTO later came into common use to distinguish the two models. The '288' refers to the car’s 2.8-litre engine and eight cylinders.
